Trainee of the Year 2009
Outstanding commitment, exceptional organisational skills and a ‘can do’ attitude saw Betty (Bow) Cover as winner of the UNE Partnerships 2009 Trainee of the Year award.
When Bow applied for the receptionist position at The Cabin Medical Practice she was a standout candidate with great communication and time management skills. Bow’s previous experience as an administrative assistant at the local school had developed her organisational and communication skills across a range of age groups.
The Cabin Medical Practice is a single doctor general practice situated in Yass, a rural town of 5000 people. Working for a busy rural medical practice proved a steep learning curve for Bow, so when the opportunity to enrol in UNE Partnerships’ Certificate III in Business (Medical Administration) was offered to her, she accepted with enthusiasm.

Through her excellent time management skills, support from her practice manager and colleagues, Bow completed her traineeship in only eight months. At team meetings, Bow presented new ideas from material in her coursework and discussed how it could be practically applied to the workplace. Her sense of enthusiasm and readiness to accept change proved extremely useful, particularly when technology changes required new procedures. Bow’s adaptability and enthusiasm has motivated other members of her team to accept that learning is a positive experience.
According to Bow, “My life changed when I started this traineeship, along with a new career. My self esteem has returned to 100%. It has made me a confident, helpful, understanding, efficient professional. The training has made me a more valuable employee by improving my knowledge base through the UNE Partnerships traineeship”.
Richard Doyle, Managing Director of UNE Partnerships, made a special presentation to Bow at her workplace on Monday 7 December 2009. “It was a pleasure to meet Bow, Dr Jonathan Williams, Mrs Kathryn Williams and The Cabin Medical Practice staff to present this award and to see the positive impact this traineeship has given to Bow. I congratulate Bow and the entire team for their support and commitment” said Richard.
