Take a greater role...
UNE Partnerships, the Education and Training Company
of the University of New England, has developed the General Practice
Nurse Leadership Development Program for nurses who are engaged
in primary health care services, being:
- nurses employed in private and public general practices
- nurses employed by Divisions of General Practice.
Its structure and content has been determined after consultation
with the Australian Divisions of General Practice, and using the
extensive expertise of UNE Partnership’s health care management
resources. The course recognises the current substantial growth
and development of the Australian general practice nurse workforce,
and aims to develop their leadership skills, to enable their effective
involvment in the planning and delivery of primary care services
and the development of their profession.
The Methodology
The Program is based on action learning and a workplace orientated
approach. Action learning is a process of learning and reflection,
supported by colleagues, with an intention of applying learning
outcomes in the workplace. The program runs over a twelve month
period as a combination of distance delivery and two experiential
learning workshops.
The Delivery and Assessment
Participants will receive full distance education materials before
the first session, an online support site and six residential workshop
days divided into two sets of three days. The program will commence
with a face-to-face session to set the parameters of learning, and
determine group and individual objectives and work-based projects.
Following attendance at the workshops, participants work individually
and in small study teams (linked electronically) to reflect on workshop
experiences and progress with their workplace-related projects.
Individuals will have access to their designated Assessor at all
times by phone, email, fax and online site for support, guidance
and assistance with concepts and assessment. UNE Partnerships' administrative
staff will also ensure that participants are contacted regularly
for pastoral support and to keep them ‘on track’.
Formal assessment is a combination of individual assessments and
a group-based project prepared as much as possible in the workshop
sessions. A mentor, chosen for their expertise, will be available
to give direct guidance to each participant.
